PACHMAYR FAQ

GRIPS

Q: What makes Pachmayr grips better than other brands of grips?

A: Feel, appearance and strength. Pachmayr grips are made of rubber, which offers better gripability, better recoil absorption and improved gun control over those made of other materials, such as Santoprene. They feature a steel insert which makes for an extremely strong, durable grip.

Pachmayr offers a variety of grip styles for many applications and hand sizes.

Q: I like the look of the wooden grips, but I really like the feel of rubber grips. Is there a compromise between the two?

A: Yes, we have American Legend Grips for just this purpose. With a fine walnut grip chassis and a wrap around Decelerator rubber grip, this grip will offer you the "best of both worlds".

Q: I need a grip specifically for a semi-auto that will provide me with control during rapid fire. What do you recommend?

A: Our Signature grips would be ideal for this application. These offer a full wrap around design (except for 1911 models which have a grip safety) with steel inserts to maintain its shape.

Q: I need a grip for a revolver that fully covers the backstrap. This is not the model I use for concealed carry, and I don’t have small hands. What do you recommend?

A: The ideal grip for this application would be either the Gripper or the Gripper Decelerator. These both offer a covered backstrap, finger grooves, a slight palm swell and are fully checkered. The Decelerator model is a softer rubber material which is excellent for recoil absorption.

Q: I want a basic, hand filling, traditional style grip for my revolver. Do you carry something like this?

A: Our original Presentation style is the perfect match for you. The Presentation grip offers classic styling with deep checkering for control.

Q: I have a small compact revolver that needs an aftermarket grip desperately. Have you any suggestions?

A: The Compac grip will be your best option for this. It is small enough to not compromise concealability, while still providing a grip large enough for control. These grips have covered backstraps and a secure non-slip surface.

Q: I have very small hands. All the revolvers I try don’t feel right as they feel so cumbersome. Have you any grips that can help?

A: For individuals with small hands, your best selection would be either the Gripper Professional or the Compac Professional. These are the smallest Pachmayr grips available. These have an open backstrap and the overall shape has been downsized 10%.

Q: I have a semi-auto that I am not real happy with the way the grip feels. It is a bit large for my hand and I do not want to spend a lot of money as this wasn’t a real expensive gun in the first place. What do you recommend?

A: A simple solution for this would be the economical Sure Grip Panels. These are panels only, without checkering, designed to give optimum control at a reduced price. These also have the steel inserts to maintain its shape.

Another solution would be the Slip-On grips. These are easy to install and come in a variety of sizes to fit most semi-auto pistols.

Q: I have some Pachmayr grips. What is the best way to keep them looking their best?

A: We recommend wiping them with Armor All.

RECOIL PADS

Q: Why would I need an aftermarket recoil pad? The one that came on the gun should be adequate otherwise the manufacturer would not have sold it to me.

A: The correct recoil pad can actually improve your shooting. Both in comfort and scores. The wrong choice could make the opposite true. With the broadest selection, Pachmayr recoil pads give you the correct choice, regardless of the type of shooting you do.

Q: Why should I buy a Pachmayr recoil pad rather than one of your competition?

A: Our recoil pads are made of rubber which has many benefits over the competitions’.

Others use either Noserex or Sorbothane which are much more difficult to grind than rubber. These others also have a much lower melting point than rubber. Sorbothane melts at 150° which the interior of a car can easily reach particularly in summer months.

Remember: a pad which feels soft to the touch will also bottom out much quicker under recoil than a pad which is designed to give gradually such as the Pachmayr patented side core "XXX" pattern.

Q: How do I determine which pad I need for my application?

A: You will need to think about what you need the pad to do for you. Think about the face shape, core design and face texture which will benefit you the most.

Q: How do I select the proper face shape?

A: The recoil pad faces are shaped to provide a contour designed to work with the face texture for optimum performance. Sporting clays pads are domed to prevent hanging up on the shoulder. Trap pads have a large pronounced curve to help position the pad on the shoulder firmly in exactly the same location every time. Field pads provide a combination of convex and concave shapes designed as a compromise for fast mounting and positive control.

Q: Does core design really matter if I select a soft pad?

A: Material softness is only part of the recoil absorbing formula. A solid soft pad does not absorb recoil like a design with cores. The core design enhances recoil absorption and maintains the pad’s stability when under recoil.

A core design that is not stable will collapse at too fast a rate causing undue pain and fatigue to the shooter. A core design that is too stiff to collapse under light recoil is almost of no use at all. Due to the design, the pad will not deflect the recoil forces.

The Side Core design with the XXXX configuration is the ultimate in recoil absorption because of the "shock absorbing" effect offered by the compressing "X" pattern. These pads have a solid base and are the best choice for those who may prefer a soft sided pad, particularly for collar bone sensitivity.

The Bottom Core design is softer in the middle and has firmer sides to absorb the sharpest recoil. A classic appearance and availability in Decelerator material makes this design the most popular and most copied Pachmayr design.

Q: How important is face texture?

A: A shooter should choose the face texture of a recoil pad based on the anticipated need or usage. Pachmayr pad face textures are placed in three classifications, light, medium and heavy. These descriptions refer to the amount of "bite" the pad gets into the shoulder when firing.

A lighter face texture is desirable for the quick mount. If the position is not right, minor shifts can be done without removing the gun butt from the shoulder. A heavy texture should be chosen when small pad movements on the shoulder can cause a target to be lost, or where recoil is such that movement can cause injury to the shooter.

Light face textures include Leather and Ribbed.

Medium face textures include Line Checkered, Screen and Stippled.

Heavy face textures include Basket Weave, Grooved and Pigeon.

Q: Will the pad thickness be important?

A: Pad thickness can be important as this will affect the length of pull. If the pad that came on the gun originally is the proper thickness for you, select a pad where the thickness is similar. If you need additional length to obtain the proper length of pull, we recommend the addition of Stock Spacers which are available in three styles, Black (.25"), White (.06") and Black and White (.25"). You can add up to 1" in length with these.

Q: Do you have any simple recommendations for a given application?

A: Below is a basic recommendation listed in order of recoil absorption from lowest to highest:

RIFLE:

Varmint/Low Recoil:

RP200, RP250, 500B, F250

Big Game/Medium Recoil:

F325, D750B

Dangerous Game/Heavy Recoil:

F990

SHOTGUN: (listed in order of increased recoil absorption)

Sporting Clays:

S250, S325, 752B, SC100, D752B

Skeet:

S250, S325, 752B, SC100, D752B, S990

Trap:

D550, T550, T660

Upland Bird:

S250, S325, 752B, SC100, D752B, S990

Q: The hole spacing is different between the pad I just purchased and the pad that was originally on my gun. What do I do?

A: The hole spacing will vary from model to model. We are unable to provide all possible variations in all pads. We recommend filling your existing screw holes in your stock with a wooden dowel rod.

Q: I have a curved stock, can I still put a recoil pad on it?

A: Yes, but the stock must be trimmed flat first.

Q: I have a Pachmayr recoil pad on my shotgun. How do I keep them looking their best?

A: The best product to maintain the appearance of the pads is Armor All.

SLIP ON PADS

Q: Why would I want a Slip-On pad?

A: These are ideal for guns which have a metal butt plate and if a pad were to be installed, would ruin the value.

PRE-FIT PADS

Q: Do I need to know the hole spacing on my stock when I order a pre-fit pad?

A. No, all pre-fit pads for wooden stock guns will require two new mounting holes be drilled. A drill with a preset stop is included with the pad.

SPACERS

Q: What are Spacers and how are they used?

A: Spacers are used to add length to a stock. They are placed between the stock and pad, and are ground to size. They are available in black, white, or a black/white combination.

SYNTHETIC STOCK ADAPTERS

Q: How do I know which to purchase and if I need one?

A: Synthetic stock adapters allow recoil pads to be fitted to synthetic stocks. Many synthetic stocks are hollow and therefore may not have material in the proper location to mount a pad in the traditional manner. If you are installing one of the medium or large pads, purchase the large stock adapter. The small stock adapter will work only with the small pad.

FLUSH MOUNT SLING SWIVELS

Q: I have an older set, will the new swivels work on these or do I have to purchase a new set including the receptacles?

A: The very early swivel receptacles do not accept the current swivels. You will want to purchase the complete set. The new receptacles do have the same thread as the early models.

SNAP CAPS

Q: Can these be cycled through the gun?

A: Yes

Q: What is the life expectancy of these?

A: Snap caps can stand up to over a thousand hits.

ACCU-SET SIGHTS

Q: How are they installed?

A: The Accu-set sights install with no gunsmithing required. Simply drift out your old fixed sight and slide in the Accu-set sight. Tighten the locking screw to secure the sight to the slide.

Q: Do these fit any other models?

A: No, these will only fit the models listed. These will only replace rear sights on pistols which originally came with FACTORY FIXED SIGHTS.

Q: Are there any windage and elevation adjustments?

A: Yes, they are adjustable for both windage and elevation.

Q: Do I need a different front sight for this to work?

A: No, they are designed to work with the existing factory front sight.

WIDGET

Q: How will the Widget help me with my 1911?

A: The Widget is designed to enable you to easily remove a tightly fitted barrel bushing, reinstall the safety lever, reinstall the slide release pin and disassemble a magazine.

Q: Will this work with other Colt-type auto pistols?

A: Yes.

MAGAZINES

Q: You used to have magazines available for several models. Do you have any of these left?

A: No, these have all been sold off several years ago. We no longer have any magazines available.

MAGAZINE BUMPERS

Q: I purchased the Magazine Bumper for the 1911. It did not come with the double faced tape that the other bumpers came with. Was I shorted these?

A: You should have received screws with these. This model is screwed to the base of the magazine instead of taped.

MAGAZINE FOLLOWER

Q: What will this do for me?

A: The contoured stainless steel magazine follower improves the feeding reliability with a variety of ammunition types.

PAC-SKIN

Q: I tried to install Pac-Skin on my shotgun, but it would not stick. Was it defective or was I doing something wrong?

A: The only time we have had problems with Pac-Skin not adhering has been when any product has been used on the surface that has left an oily, non-stick residue on the gun. Also if you have used a silicone cloth on the gun, it will not be able to adhere. This also will not stick if you have cleaned even a synthetic stock with soap and water or your wood stock has an oil finish. Many dish washing liquids and other soaps have hand lotion in them that leaves an oily residue on the surface.

We recommend cleaning the surface with a clean dry cloth, with Simple Green, Orange-All or a similar cleanser prior to installing.
